The battle is won or lost in the first five minutes.
Nobody plans a bad night. It starts with a thought. Then a pause. Then a second thought. Somewhere in those first five minutes, a line gets crossed — quietly, without ceremony. By the time most men realize they’re in trouble, the decision is already made.
The battle is won or lost before the intensity peaks. You’re actually at your strongest in the very first moment — before the thought gains momentum. God is present in that first moment, not just picking up the pieces afterward. That means you are not powerless. You are not alone.
“Take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5
What lie do you tend to agree with in those first few seconds? What does it sound like — in your own voice?
Lord, I've lost the battle in the first five seconds more times than I can count — not because I'm weak, but because I never fought there. I've been trying to win downstream, after the thought already had momentum. Today I'm asking You to meet me in the first moment. The very first one. Before the pause, before the second thought, before the line gets crossed. You're already there — I just keep forgetting to look. Train me to take every thought captive before it takes me. Give me the reflex to invite You in before I invite anything else. I am not powerless in that first moment. I am not alone. Help me believe that enough to act like it. Amen.
This week, catch the thought before you act on it. Not hours later — in the moment. Bring God into that exact second.
